All about raw feeding

Single protein dog food has become a popular feeding method for modern dogs.

At Big Dog Pet Foods, we’re passionate about feeding pets a mixed protein diet, meat is an essential component of a dog’s diet, providing them with protein, amino acids and other essential nutrients to help them thrive. Different protein sources will all provide different ratios of these nutrients that our dogs need.

Which is why we have a variety of single protein raw dog food options within our range for dogs who have intolerances to certain proteins and need to be on a single meat protein diet.

We have 3 Single Meat Protein Recipes to choose from.

When to restrict a dog to single meat protein diet?

Single protein dog foods are great for pets that can’t tolerate other proteins, or when conducting an elimination diet.

When should you use each single protein diet?

Our single protein raw dog food range is great for dogs with allergies. If your dog has a suspected poultry allergy, stick with Goat and Kangaroo. Kanga is an excellent low-fat option for pets needing to lose weight, thanks to its low fat content. Turkey is one of our most popular flavours due to its easy digestibility and high palatability.

Is your dog reacting to food or the process it’s been through?

If you suspect that your dog has a food allergy or intolerance, you should chat to your veterinarian to diagnose and help manage this. A qualified canine nutritionist is also an excellent option to help with the management of a food allergy or intolerance. Food allergies and food intolerances are often confused and mislabeled, since they have similar symptoms, but the root of the issue is different, so it’s important to work with your vet to get the right diagnosis.

What if it’s not a food allergy?

If you’re unsure, we have a few articles that may be helpful for you to eliminate what the cause of your pet’s symptoms are.

We know that good health starts in the gut, so a high quality diet is important to support our dogs’ immune systems. A highly processed diet can put pressure on a dog’s immune system which can cause them to display symptoms similar to a food allergy (itchy, digestive upsets etc), which Animal Nutritionist, Narelle Cooke explains could be Leaky Gut.

Why is my dog itchy? There are many common household items that could be giving your dog (or cat) itchy skin. This article lists common allergens our pets may be exposed to in their environment.

What is your dog’s poo telling you? If your dog’s symptoms are affecting their digestive system, we have a handy ‘Poo Guide’ and ‘Doo-doo Diary’ for you to categorise and record your dog’s bowel movements to share with your vet.

If you’re ever in doubt, make sure you chat with your vet. A food allergy can be managed once you know what you’re dealing with. Outside of our single protein dog food range, your dog still may be able to enjoy some of our raw Mixed Protein Diets, while avoiding their allergen protein.
